Dear David,

Thanks for taking the trouble to look at our website and to contact us - we are always delighted to have feedback.

I can understand that you would wish to leave this lovely area and any wildlife there undisturbed. However, it is in a very central location and owned by the county council. Although they have neglected it for a while it seems inevitable - especially with the current squeeze on local government finance - that sooner or later they will seek to sell it off for development. The only developers that could offer the kind of price expected - and the county council would have to accept the highest tender - would likely want to build all over the site and the kind of thing the local community might not consider to be in its best interests.

To fend off such an outcome it is important for the local community to establish some kind of rights over use of the land - hence the allotments, etc, and also to look for evidence - protected wildlife or a listable building, for instance - that might fend off unwanted development. Such things are not mutually exclusive - digging in certain areas, using organic techniques, or camping and holding community events are unlikely to be anywhere near as detrimental to any wildlife as any kind of intensive development.

At such times it is important to find pragmatic solutions that can work on various levels to fend off the total loss of this amazing site.

Best wishes, Susan

"There were proposals for a group to look into ... investigation of wildlife on the site that ought to be protected ..."

So given your "call to arms" for folk to come and dig up the wild plants and drive out the wild animals by weeding the land and turning it into allotments, I take it Susan Murray (presumably on behalf of the Green Party) doesn't agree with investigating of wildlife on the site.

Why can't you just leave the land alone? There are plenty of community spaces in the town already, so let's keep this bit of land free for wildlife instead.

David Arno.

The Green Party does support many instances of peaceful direct action aimed at drawing attention to the serious damage we are inflicting upon the planet. In this case the occupation is also highlighting the fact that a valuable community asset is being left unused - in the case of the land, and is in danger of being destroyed - without any community involvement - in the case of the school buildings.

The climate camp itself is very low tech and certainly not inflicting any damage upon the site - indeed the campers are already planning a litter pick of rubbish already on site when they moved in. They have also done the community a huge service in uncovering plans for the site that apparently have no democratic approval - from councillors let alone the public.
